KEY FOCUS AREA - OPERATIVE TECHNIQUE AND EXPERIMENTAL SURGERY

The KEY FOCUS area in operative technique and experimental surgery has as its basic structure professors from the Laboratory of Experimental Surgery of the department of surgery of the School of Medical Sciences, UERJ who are dedicated to improve knowledge in various surgical conditions.. In addition to their research activities, professors are also involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching at the school of medicine. The laboratory of experimental surgery has the necessary infrastructure to practice experimental surgery with small and medium-sized animals (especially mice, rats, hamsters and rabbits). Its physical plant comprises a vivarium, a deposit for the storage of materials, feed and wood shavings, and an operating room, equipped with basic surgical instruments and anesthetic material. Works for the expansion of the physical area of the laboratory are planned for this year 2006, as well as the purchase of new equipment and permanent materials. The Department of Higher Education (SESU) of the Ministry of Education has already allocated the resources for this purpose, and the amount is deposited in the university's account. With regard to human resources, in addition to professors, the laboratory has two vivarium technicians, a veterinarian, with knowledge in anesthesia, and a nutritionist. It has specific equipment and materials for carrying out and documenting experimental surgical procedures, such as, anesthetic equipment, thermal cautery, oxygen cylinder, surgical instruments, equipment for photography and filming, surgical microscope, magnifying glasses, scale for animal weighing and precision analytical scales, among others.
